In an unprecedented case, federal prosecutors handed 18-year-old Parvin Dhaliwal to state authorities in Arizona, where Dhaliwal attends college. Dhaliwal was caught with music and movies on his computer and (revealed almost as a footnote at the bottom of the article) was selling the material. Some of the films were in theatrical release only, indicating that they must have been unauthorized copies. Dhaliwal received a three-month (deferred) jail sentence, three years of probation, a $5,400 fine, and 200 hours of community service. This would be absolutely scorn-worthy if it weren't for the part about selling the content. But reports do not indicate that the commercial aspect of Dhaliwal's activities factored in the feds' decision to get the state involved (which appears to be an age-related matter, as Dhaliwal was a minor when the crime was commited) or in the sentencing.
